This is one of those albums where the craft is impossible to miss. The sound is clean and wide in that mid eighties way, but the songs are strong enough that it does not just feel like a production demo. I get why smaller review pieces keep coming back to how polished and spacious it is, because that really is part of the appeal. This UK Vertigo LP makes the whole thing feel patient and well built. It is not my favorite kind of record emotionally, but it is very easy to respect and it has more staying power than I used to give it.

You can really hear why people call this the Tom Petty breakthrough. He was fighting for control around this period and the album carries that kind of locked in confidence, like the band knew exactly what they wanted to sound like and refused to waste a second. The Jimmy Iovine production feels really careful without sanding the songs down, and this US Backstreet LP gives the guitars a nice clear punch. Refugee and Here Comes My Girl still feel huge, but the bigger thing for me is how steady the whole album is. It sounds like classic American rock made by people who had something to prove and absolutely proved it.
