Live in Montreux1979

4.5/5
Jazz

If you know Japanese jazz, you know pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto for his ultra-clean studio albums like Misty. This record is different as it is recorded live at the 1979 Montreux Jazz Festival under the audiophile Three Blind Mice label. It is a late-period Three Blind Mice live album which makes it different from the usual TBM studio/audiophile-room feeling

OK Computer1997

5.0/5OK Computer - 1997 - UK - Parlophone - NODATA 02 - Vinyl, LP, Album, White Label
ElectronicRockAlternative Rock

OK Computer is a good vinyl album because it has a lot of contrast such as small details, sudden guitar explosions, quiet tension, and big atmospheric sections. The 2LP format matters because the album is long and dense. I own the original 1997 UK Parlophone 2LP which has the famous NODATA identity. There are easier copies to buy, especially the later XL reissues, which are also pretty decent. This album has a unsettling eerie atmosphere. Songs like “Subterranean Homesick Alien,” “Climbing Up the Walls use weird textures to create loneliness and dread, but there are also peaceful moments in “Let Down,” “Lucky". This album is definitely one of the most famous one, and you must give it a try!

5.0/5The Bends - 1995 - UK - Parlophone - PCS 7372, 8296261 - Vinyl, LP, Repress
RockAlternative Rock

The Bends is the album where Radiohead stopped being “the Creep band” and became a serious album band. It is more welcoming than OK Computer but still emotionally huge. This is still a guitar record, but it is not just basic 90s alt-rock. The sound has big guitar swells, quiet/loud shifts, and a lot more atmosphere than Pablo Honey. If you mainly love the electronic and experimental stuff, The Bends can feel abit early, but if you like Radiohead as a dramatic, slightly miserable guitar band, this might be one of their most satisfying records. My original UK Parlophone is good but there is often many comparisons with later XL copies, which supposedly sounds good even without owning the original vinyl.

I dont think there is a need to explain why this album is good. At that point Michael Jackson was pretty must the most famous guy on the planet. The one i have is a 1982 US Epic Pitman pressing QE 38112. A small detail is the early back cover without the Michael Jackson co-producer credit, which is something not alot cares about.

The Stone Roses’ debut was treated like a near-perfect classic. This album arrived around five years later, so expectations were very high. Most people were expecting like a The Stone Roses Part 2, but the band delivered something more different, causing this album to be quite controversial, as for me I don’t think Second Coming is better than the first album (of course) I own a 1994 UK Geffen 2LP original pressing, GEF 24503. It has a collector appeal in my opniions because original 90s pressings were often produced in smaller numbers.

This album is built more around rhythm, loops, percussion than normal rock songwriting. By 1980, Talking Heads were barely behaving like a rock band anymore. The first side “Born Under Punches” and “Crosseyed and Painless” should not sound flat/stale, the groove should stay alive, if it doesn't perhaps your pressing isn't that good. “Once in a Lifetime” is obviously the track everyone knows I own a 1980 US Sire Winchester pressing and im satisfied with it as it is not a modern reissue and it was from that era

Diamond Life is Sade’s 1984 debut, and it smooth and stylish. You can use it as classy background music in any where to be honest. If the vinyl is noisy, you would notice it straight away. A clean copy lets the bass sit nicely, keeps the vocals clean, The original UK 80s pressing is good for this.

I own US 1977 RSO copy of Slowhand RS-1-3030, gatefold. Nothing special about how I got it, picked it out of a dollar bin a while back without even checking the runouts first, which in hindsight was a mistake because this one turned out to be a Santa Maria (Columbia) pressing, one of the versions collectors specifically call out as sounding a little more open and dynamic than some of the other US plants floating around on this catalog number. US copies are common and cheap, often a few dollars in the wild. The US version came from at least four different plants, and depending which one you end up with, you get a slightly different-sounding record for the exact same catalog number and cover. I didn't even know this until I started poking around forums after the fact. If you're picking one up, I wouldn't stress about hunting a specific plant, any clean US or UK original is going to sound fine. But if you're the type who flips the record over and checks the runouts before you buy (guilty), Santa Maria or Richmond seem to be the ones people are happier with.

JazzHard Bop

Original Blue Note copies of Blue Train are so expensive, and honestly those are records are not for normal collectors. A clean original can cost crazy money, and even then, condition is everything. So for me, the Japanese King pressing feels like a much more realistic collector copy. It feels like the smarter route too. It is still collectible, still vintage, and still has a proper Blue Note feel without going broke. The thing I like about these Japanese Blue Note reissues is that they usually feel very well put together. Quiet vinyl, clean packaging, and that nice Japanese attention to detail. This copy is not trying to be an original RVG-cut Blue Note, and I think that is fine. It has its own appeal: a clean, controlled, very listenable version of one of the most famous jazz albums ever. Sound-wise, Blue Train is a great record to test horn presence. On the title track, Coltrane’s tenor has to sound full and solid. Fuller's trombone sits noticeably left and further back, Morgan's trumpet is more forward.

Abbey Road1969

RockPop Rock

Abbey Road is the final album the Beatles recorded together When you play "Come Together," Ringo’s snare has this immediate pop, and Paul's bass line feels incredibly forward. But the real test for me is always the Side 2 medley. The acoustic guitar intro to "Here Comes The Sun" has a woody warmth and presence that just feels alive in the room. And if your copy is clean enough to survive the quiet cricket sound effects transitioning into "Sun King" without a wall of surface noise, you’ve won the lottery Decent copies are getting harder to buy without painful shipping fees from across the pond. If you just want a fat-sounding version for a casual setup, the modern 2019 reissue is perfectly fine. Capitol Records US pressings from the 1980s and 1990s I heard, wasn't too good

4.5/5Hounds Of Love - 2010 - US - Audio Fidelity (3) - AFZLP 087 - Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Numbered, Reissue, Remastered
ElectronicRockPopArt Rock

For this listen, I’m using the 2010 US Audio Fidelity pressing of Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, catalogue number AFZLP 087. This is the pink/grey marbled 180g version, mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray. That already makes it a more interesting copy than a random coloured reissue. A lot of coloured vinyl feels like it exists just to look nice, but this one actually is different What I like about Hounds of Love on vinyl is how much the format suits the album’s structure. Side one has the more immediate songs, while side two becomes The Ninth Wave, which feels like a little film playing out across one side of the record. Streaming makes it easy to treat everything like one long playlist, but vinyl makes the split feel intentional. I would not say this is the only version worth owning. Original UK copies have their own collector appeal, and later reissues are easier to find. But this 2010 Audio Fidelity pressing is a really nice middle ground, collectible, good-looking, and actually interesting from a mastering point of view.

This is probably one of the most talked-about Pink Floyd pressings ever. Not just because it sounds good, but because the whole thing has become part of vinyl collector culture. Pink Floyd Archives also warns that “first issue” and “first pressing” are not always the same thing, even a solid blue triangle copy needs runout/mother/stamper details to judge how early it actually is. This is huge collector flex, but not necessarily the smartest value buy, and a bad-condition copy is not magically good just because the label is rare. Some later UK pressings are also well-liked by collectors and can be a much smarter buy if you mainly care about sound This vinyl is actually a good system test check track. “Time” is a system-check track, the clocks should jump out with space and attack, but not become harsh. “Money” tests bass, groove, and separation. The cash register loop should feel clean not messy. “Us and Them” is where you hear whether the pressing has a quiet background and wide soundstage. “The Great Gig In The Sky” is all about vocal presence and dynamics. A noisy or worn copy will make this track suffer badly.

Songs From The Big Chair1985

4.5/5Songs From The Big Chair - 1985 - UK - Mercury - MERH 58 - Vinyl
ElectronicRockPopNew Wave

The original UK Mercury MERH 58 is still fairly findable, not impossible, which makes it a good collector/audiophile blog pick. Collectors often compares the UK original against later reissues and the US copies. Some collectors prefer certain US copies or later reissues, and some discussions mention the UK being a bit bright I am prety pleased with my UK original. On a good copy, the main things to listen for are bass weight, vocal presence, top-end extension, and whether the huge 80s production feels open or congested. This album benefits from a pressing with good separation because the arrangements are dense, with synths, drums, bass, vocals, guitar lines, sax, and big choruses all competing for space. Might be a good first to collect without spending too much money, but because it sold a lot, condition matters, as a cheap copy with groove wear will ruin some parts

Purple Rain is not rare, but clean original copies are still desirable. There are newer pressings, remasters, and even premium editions now, but the original 1984 feels more close to the heart. Purple Rain sold a lot, so it is not impossible to find, but a lot of copies were clearly played hard. Getting a clean original copy feels different from just picking up any old copy. This is the album that pushed Prince from already-big to full superstar level. You get drum machines, synths, big guitars, funk, pop, rock, and Prince’s voice right in the middle of everything. It is also one of those 80s records where the production, mix, and pressing really matter.

This is honestly a pretty ridiculous way to own the album. Four records, 45RPM, constant flipping, but that means more groove space, which usually helps with dynamics, bass, and overall clarity. The 2008 45RPM box set is often brought up as one of the best-sounding versions of the album, it could probbaly just be the best vinyl version. This album is already famous for being extremely polished and huge-sounding, but the 45RPM format helps that production feel even bigger. The 2021 remaster is easier to find and cheaper but seems like peoples reviews are quite mixed

Kind of Blue is one of the safest “must-own” jazz records I’m listening to the Analogue Productions UHQR 45RPM pressing. It was mastered by Bernie Grundman from the original 3-track master tapes, and the 45RPM edition was limited to 25,000 copies. This is one of those albums where the pressing really matters. Because the music has so much space, a noisy copy would be distracting. Here, the background is quiet However, the main downside is price, as cheaper versions of Kind of Blue already sound good.

I’m playing the 2011 45RPM pressing mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, pressed at Pallas. It is probably overkill for an album this famous, but honestly, it suits the record really well. The whole thing sounds open, clean, and very polished. The vocals, drums, and bass all sounds good The 45RPM format does mean more flipping, which can be annoying. The album feels bigger and more alive than I expected. Sometimes a record is popular because people overhype it. Rumours is popular because it really is that good.

There are some albums that are hard to review because everyone already knows them. Thriller is definitely one of those records. Pressing-wise, this is also one of those albums where collectors can go very deep. Original copies are usually a safe choice because the album was already well recorded and mastered. Japanese pressings also get a lot of love for being quiet and balanced, while the MoFi versions are more of an audiophile rabbit hole if you really want to spend the money. Thriller is the kind of record that reminds you why some albums become “obvious classics.”

At first, I thought the album was a weird mess because of the spoken-word fairy-tale sections from Mount Vernon and Fairway. But after realizing that was originally a separate bonus EP, the actual album became much easier to appreciate. Without that distraction, Holland is a surprisingly strong later-period Beach Boys record. This is not the sunny surf-pop Beach Boys most casual listeners think of. Holland is not where I would tell someone to start with The Beach Boys, but it is definitely worth hearing if you already know the classics

My first proper introduction to Iron Maiden was Brave New World, so I definitely came in later than the classic fans who grew up with the 80s albums. The first two albums are very different from the epic Iron Maiden most people think of today. Iron Maiden from 1980 feels raw, rough, and almost punky at times. You can already hear the classic Maiden DNA though, especially in the galloping bass lines and twin guitar leads. I probably would not tell a new listener to start with the debut album, but these early records are important if you want to understand where Iron Maiden came from. They show the band before all the huge, epic storytelling fully took over, and there is a charm in hearing them sound younger, rawer, and less polished.

I didn’t really know what to expect from DAMN. after To Pimp a Butterfly. Kendrick could have gone even deeper into the jazzy, political, concept-heavy sound, but instead he made something different This album has some of Kendrick’s most replayable songs. “DNA.” hits immediately, especially when the beat kicks in, and “HUMBLE. The cover also grew on me. At first I thought it looked kind of ugly and awkward, but I think that is the point. It looks rough, tired, and uncomfortable, which actually fits the album pretty well. On vinyl, the album sounds surprisingly good too. The bass is strong, the pressing feels solid, and the whole thing has a nice weight to it. For a modern hip-hop album, it translates really well onto record.
